Work In Progress Night: Arduino miscellany
by [strawdog] @ 2013-11-29 08:00:00 -0500 EST

This week there are a bunch of new Arduino sensors to try out - temperature, humidity and barometric pressure. Plus, we may try to build a couple custom ones.

Cost: Free, although pass-the-hat style donations to support the lab are encouraged.

Wednesday Dec. 4, 18:30-22:00

On Work In Progress Night a foulaber will bring a work in progress to the lab and work on it for a few hours. Anyone interested can drop in to check it out and discuss the project, receive or give advice, or bring a similar project and work on it. There is no promise that anything will actually work, but it should be fun!!!

Work In Progress Night: Etch a sketch drawing machine. The sequel.
by [strawdog] @ 2013-11-21 00:00:00 -0500 EST

We already had the motorised etch a sketch at a previous WIP night, but it was still very far from completion. While the idea of putting a couple steppers on an etch a sketch to produce etch a sketch drawings seems straightforward, there are actually a number of tricky points. There is quite a bit of mechanical backlash in the sketch, meaning that the order in which you draw lines makes a lot of difference. The image processing required to generate a scene which can be drawn in a single line from a picture is also interesting.

Results from the last time the etch a sketch was at WIP night. http://strawprojects.blogspot.ca/2013/10/backlash-complications.html

Cost: Free, although pass-the-hat style donations to support the lab are encouraged.

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT #6: Mindwave Mobile
by [strawdog] @ 2013-11-08 00:00:00 -0500 EST

Supposedly, the Neurosky Mindwave Mobile has a fairly flexible developer API. I’ve got a Mindwave. It’s time to try it out.

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT #5: HIGH VOLTAGE
by [strawdog] @ 2013-10-31 00:00:00 -0500 -0500

Everyone needs a few kilovolts now and then. Using a flyback transformer or an automotive coil it is possible to build a moderately high voltage supply. Several interesting projects can be done with this, including ionic lifters, Kirlian photography and alpha particle detection, not to mention big fancy sparks.

I’ve done some work on this in the past with a trivially simple circuit, but when it came time to actually use the high voltage in projects, it wasn’t up to the job. Time to take it to the next level.

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT #4: VISION THING
by [strawdog] @ 2013-10-18 00:00:00 -0400 EDT

This wednesdays WIP night will be dedicated to various OpenCV projects. This is partly to prepare material for the upcoming Open CV workshop, but we also have a number of vision based projects on the go. Come by and get a sneak preview of the course, or just chat about computer vision.

Cost: Free, although pass-the-hat style donations to support the lab are encouraged.

GNU/Linux install fest and Puppet tutorial
by [strawdog] @ 2013-10-15 00:00:00 -0400 EDT

__POSTPONED DUE TO LACK OF SIGNUPS__
2 day Workshop OCTOBER 26th and 27th 2013 Postponed:
__- to enjoy all level of linux heaven -__
  • BYOL- (bring your own laptop)
  • Entry fee: Donation based: James offers his time and Foulab the space - you give what you think is right ;-)
[Sign up here!](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1uuC46L1Q5icD-9Dag2nRascrJdXIgGHLjKFEVpJ1bUE/viewform)

Day 1: GNU/Linux install fest and beginner tutorial

  • “Late Morning” -10:00:

    • Installfest: Bring your own machine. Install GNU/Linux on your machine.
  • Afternoon-ish: 15:00 GNU/Linux intro-intermediate tutorial.

    • Intro: (1-1.5 hours max)
    • Intermediate: (1-2 hours depending on skill level and interest)

Day 2: Intermediate/Advanced Puppet tutorial

  • “Later Morning” 11:00 (we’re sysadmins, right)
  • Sysadmin/Devops/Puppet: Bring your own machine, or bring your machine back.

The general idea is that if you’re an ultra beginner, you come at the very start, and if you’re more intermediate and already have a Linux box, you can come in later on. Linux comfortable users who want to do some puppet/devops stuff can come only for day 2. Ultra beginners who aren’t ready for puppet or sysadmin-ing can only come for day 1.

Foulab Double Header: Intro to OpenCV / Intro to WebGL
by [strawdog] @ 2013-10-10 00:00:00 -0400 EDT

POSTPONED DUE TO LACK OF SIGNUPS
Nov 2 and 3 Postponed, Foulab will present two workshops. On Saturday, learn to bring visual interaction to your projects with Introduction to computer vision with OpenCV, and on Sunday, step up to modern graphics in your web applications with Introduction to WebGL. Each workshop will run from 13:00h to 17:00h. Workshop attendance is $30 each, or $50 to attend both workshops. Each workshop is limited to 20 places, so get 'em while they're hot.

Tickets are for sale on eventbrite Each event alone is 30$, or 50$ to attend both.

The workshop presentations will be in English, but we are more than happy to provide support and answer questions in French.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER VISION WITH OPENCV

Do you want to make your computer react to light, movement and gestures? Do you want to capture and process images and video as part of your project? Do you wonder: whats wrong with these lazy AI programmers, why can’t my computer recognize me yet? Get answers to all these questions and more at the Foulab Workshop “Introduction to computer vision with OpenCV”!

The workshop is aimed at people with some programming knowledge, but not necessarily any computer vision knowledge. We will cover:

  • how to install and set up the Open Computer Vision toolkit,
  • an introduction to computer vision algorithms,
  • a couple interactive OpenCV demonstrations that you can use as a starting point for your own projects.

The primary programming language for the workshop will be Python. The workshop has been updated from previous workshops to cover OpenCV 2.4.6, and the latest version of OpenCV’s python interface.

Time: Saturday, November 2, 1-5pm Postponed
Required materials: laptop, webcam

While this workshop will be limited in scope to OpenCV itself, people are encouraged to stay after the workshop and discuss more advanced topics, such as the interfacing of openCV with other libraries and languages. If you have projects in mind or in progress, please do stick around and chat with us!

INTRODUCTION TO WEBGL

Long gone are the days of simple text tickers and epileptic shock inducing blink tags. These days we see javascript as a fast growing multimedia oriented language, and the jump to 3D is now at the cutting edge of competing with your native desktop application with WebGL.

In collaboration with Montreal’s very own demoparty, RECURSION, and it’s hackerspace, Foulab, we are happy to present an introduction to the modern OpenGL 3D processing pipeline through OpenGL.

Building off certain image processing concepts presented in the OpenCV workshop, we will give you an introduction to the following concepts so that you may start programming your own 3D demoes.

We will go over a number of small things specific to basic demo making including: setting up the rendering pipeline, in addition to explaining its internals. Simple examples of procedural rendering. As well as an overview of how this can go on to be applied to OpenGL in general.

Time: Sunday, November 3rd, 1-5pm
Required materials: laptop, chrome

Please be advised that a working knowledge of basic linear algebra will be required, in addition to that of programming.
