Introduction to computer vision with OpenCV
by [strawdog] @ 2014-01-25 00:00:00 -0500 EST

No space left! However, if you would like to indicate your interest in us repeating the workshop please do at the email below.
Do you want to make your computer react to light, movement and gestures? Do you want to capture and process images and video as part of your project? Do you wonder: whats wrong with these lazy AI programmers, why can’t my computer recognize me yet? Get answers to all these questions and more at the Foulab Workshop “Introduction to computer vision with OpenCV”! OpenCV is an open source library for capturing and analyzing images and video. It is written in C/C++, and API’s are available in Python, Java and on Android and iOS.

The workshop is aimed at people with some programming knowledge, but not necessarily any computer vision knowledge. We will cover:

  • How to install and set up the Open Computer Vision toolkit (OpenCV),
  • An introduction to computer vision algorithms (including image filtering, face detection, segmentation, tracking and stereo vision),
  • Code walkthrough and demonstration of OpenCV examples that you can use as starting points for your own projects.

The primary programming language for the workshop will be Python. The workshop has been updated from previous workshops to cover OpenCV 2.4.6, and the latest version of OpenCV’s python interface. The workshop presentations will be in English, but we are more than happy to provide support and answer questions in French.

Time: Sunday, February 9, 1-5pm
No space left! However, if you would like to indicate your interest in us repeating the workshop please do at the email below.
Cost: 25$ (Cash, or make arrangements in advance at the following email)
RSVP to strawdog3 (at) gmail.com required. Space is limited.
Required materials: laptop, webcam

While this workshop will be limited in scope to OpenCV itself, people are encouraged to stay after the workshop and discuss more advanced topics, such as the interfacing of openCV with other libraries and languages. If you have projects in mind or in progress, please do stick around and chat with us!

Work In Progress Night: Arduino miscellany
by [strawdog] @ 2013-11-29 08:00:00 -0500 EST

This week there are a bunch of new Arduino sensors to try out - temperature, humidity and barometric pressure. Plus, we may try to build a couple custom ones.

Cost: Free, although pass-the-hat style donations to support the lab are encouraged.

Wednesday Dec. 4, 18:30-22:00

On Work In Progress Night a foulaber will bring a work in progress to the lab and work on it for a few hours. Anyone interested can drop in to check it out and discuss the project, receive or give advice, or bring a similar project and work on it. There is no promise that anything will actually work, but it should be fun!!!

Work In Progress Night: Etch a sketch drawing machine. The sequel.
by [strawdog] @ 2013-11-21 00:00:00 -0500 EST

We already had the motorised etch a sketch at a previous WIP night, but it was still very far from completion. While the idea of putting a couple steppers on an etch a sketch to produce etch a sketch drawings seems straightforward, there are actually a number of tricky points. There is quite a bit of mechanical backlash in the sketch, meaning that the order in which you draw lines makes a lot of difference. The image processing required to generate a scene which can be drawn in a single line from a picture is also interesting.

Results from the last time the etch a sketch was at WIP night. http://strawprojects.blogspot.ca/2013/10/backlash-complications.html

Cost: Free, although pass-the-hat style donations to support the lab are encouraged.

WORK IN PROGRESS NIGHT #6: Mindwave Mobile
by [strawdog] @ 2013-11-08 00:00:00 -0500 EST

Supposedly, the Neurosky Mindwave Mobile has a fairly flexible developer API. I’ve got a Mindwave. It’s time to try it out.

Cost: Free, although pass-the-hat style donations to support the lab are encouraged.
